SQL Server DBA (Production)Job DetailsReporting to:Infrastructure ManagerLocation:WolverhamptonMain Purpose*To work as a member of the Infrastructure team, ensuring a high quality service is delivered to both internal and external customers.*To support the Infrastructure Manager in assisting with the timely delivery of projects and tasks relating to the SQL Server database portfolioMajor Responsibilities*Primary ownership and administration of all SQL Server databases and servers*Proactive management of the SQL Server database portfolio, ensuring the optimal configuration of each database*To act as back up and peer reviewer for the database developer*Provide technical leadership, consultancy and assistance within areas of expertise for all IT teams to leverage specialist knowledge*Proactive and regular communication with the business and other areas of IT *Develop sound professional working relationships with IT colleagues, business staff and management, giving them confidence in the DBA whilst acquiring an understanding of the employer's business*Ensure that Incident Requests are resolved within specified SLA's*Ensure proper escalation procedures are followed and where required, liaise with other support areas and 3rd parties to ensure problems are resolved within SLA*Comply with policy, audit and legal requirements such as Health & Safety, the Data Protection Act and company ISO27001 policies.*Provide standards and recommendations for IT strategic development. Ensure that IT standards are followed and developed as required*Ensure relevant support documentation is accurate and regularly maintained.*Ensure effective capacity planning procedures are in place and fully utilized.*Proactive monitoring and management of all environments to identify trends and potential problem areas*Implement and maintain effective BCP/DR solutions where required.Key Tasks*Proactive Database and log file management (sizes / monitoring / placement)*Windows and SQL Server configuration. (Windows 2003 / 2008 - SQL Server 2005 / 2008)*Server performance monitoring and fine tuning *Setting server hardware specifications*Carry out SQL Server builds *Carry out database backups*SQL Server Disaster Recovery and BCP (DoubleTake / database mirroring)*SQL Server Login management.*Assist the Helpdesk and other technical teams in diagnosing and fixing problems*Diagnose and address performance issues and other problems with internal database servers, in conjunction with the Infrastructure team.*Assist with proactively monitoring the servers and other ongoing database administration tasks, in conjunction with the Infrastructure team.*The creation of procedures for DR/Failover purposes that can be implemented by IT colleagues*Routine Daily checks of SQL server maintenance tasks, hardware or software issues and reporting on their status*Proactively identifying areas for improvement within the database estate and associated infrastructure, making recommendations as the SME, planning and executing their implementation in both the short and long terms.Administration and Process Management*Ensure any enhancement and project work is delivered on time and to the agreed scope*Completion of timesheets and project updates in a timely manner*Update Support Works (the internal Support call management system) calls as required*Produce and update project and support documentation as required.Key Skills*Solid, hands-on experience in Clustering, Replication and DB Mirroring, SSRS, SSAS*A solid understanding of server hardware / disk configurations and how they relate to SQL Server architecture and configuration *An understanding of Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008.*Experience running multiple SQL Server instances on the same physical server*Experience of running SQL Server in a virtual environment*Experience of SAN technologies would also be desirableContact with Others*Helpdesk, Infrastructure, Production, IT Support, Sales.*Customers, Customer Services*Suppliers
