Category managers and executives are vital for companies looking for long term growth - without the category growing, whether it’s beauty products, Italian ready meals, cat food or clothing, growth isn’t sustainable.

So what do you need to be able to do as a category person? The ability to analyse complex data from diverse sources and provide businesses with insight on where and how they can grow is a critical skill set.

Good IT skills are essential, a minimum of strong MS Excel knowledge, with experience of CRM and using 3rd party solutions from insights and data providers.

Alongside this are your softer skills. Understanding the Why and not just the What is a key skill. Anyone can create a graph, but telling someone with no technical knowledge or previous exposure to the data what it is saying is where you come into your own.

We are working with a number of clients who are looking for category professionals to join their organisations across the East Midlands. Roles, locations and salaries vary but there is a need for people like you. Your background could be in insights, category management, marketing or business analysis, FMCG, retail, finance, it doesn’t matter - the important thing is being able to engage people and explain the Why.
