Serco manage HMP Dovegate, a Category B prison based near Uttoxeter in Staffordshire housing over 1100 male prisoners (aged 21+) all serving a range of sentences including; trial, remand, awaiting sentence and convicted men serving between 4 years to life. We are in a unique position of having not only a large Category B population, with designated wings for remand, drug intervention and vulnerable prisoners but also a 200-bed Therapeutic Prison made up of 6 Therapeutic Communities offering its residents daily group therapy. The prison is currently working towards being a smoke free site therefore smoking will be prohibited on site.

We are currently recruiting x 10 Security Officers to join our large custodial team. The starting salary is £16,722, rising to £17,373 after 12 months and after 3 years to £18,673.
Running a successful prison is a 24/7 operation and there is a requirement to work various shifts to include permanent nights or days, within an average working week of 40 hrs.
Overview of the Role
As a Security Officer at HMP Dovegate you will perform a pivotal role in supporting and safeguarding our prisoners and staff members every day. The primary purpose of this role will be working within the communications room to ensure the smooth running and security of the establishment whilst prisoners and staff members go about their daily routine.
Your duties will involve effectively coordinating the logistics around prisoner/staff movements and to ensure vulnerable prisoners and offenders within the main prison are escorted safely and securely around the establishment.
Operational matters such as prisoner headcounts, searching, supervision and security together with administrative processes must all be effectively delivered. You will perform your duties within the bounds of all local and national orders, rules, regulations and expectations.
To succeed as a Security Officer at HMP Dovegate, there are a number of qualities we are looking for. These include; a team work mind-set, a confident communicator along with the ability to give instructions clearly and effectively, whilst being assertive when required.
Your naturally good awareness and observational skills will stand you in good stead for this role, along with your ability to handle and adapt to change effectively whilst maintaining integrity and professionalism in a variety of challenging situations.
You may have gained these skills from a variety of backgrounds. Some of our Security Officers have come from such diverse areas like customer service, other security environments, the military; some have been managers or supervisors, and others have developed their interpersonal skills by working with members of the public or as part of a team. As a minimum you will have a good level of English and Maths and be proficient in the use of IT.

You will commence on a 2 week non-custodial training course which will include security awareness and safer custody training. We are looking to commence this course in April 2017 and 100% attendance is mandatory during this time. It is an interactive and informative training course, which will challenge and develop you but it has been designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills required to be a successful Security Officer. Following this you will be assigned a mentor and carry out a 2 week shadowing period. We will continually invest in your training and development throughout your career with us.
