About

Are you aged 60 or over and passionate about volunteering? Vintage Volunteers is an exciting new project dedicated to people aged 60+ in Stoke on Trent and Newcastle Under Lyme. The project aims to support 60+ members of the community into bespoke, flexible volunteering opportunities which improves the health and wellbeing of participants, brings much needed skills and experience to the voluntary sector, enhances the sense of community cohesion and promotes a positive view of aging.

Funding for this project has been awarded by the Big Lottery for 3 years and commenced in May 2017.

Purpose of the role

The Vintage Volunteers team recognise that there are barriers to volunteering which can prevent the meaningful participation of older people. There are an increasing number of 60+ members of the community who are lonely, live in isolation and lack the confidence to proactively engage in social activities. As an active member of the Newcastle Under Lyme and/or Stoke on Trent community, your role as a Champion would see you promoting the widely recognised health and wellbeing benefits of volunteering locally. And where necessary, provide friendly support to those who need extra help to find their perfect volunteer role.

Tasks

Vintage Volunteer Champions can support the project in many ways;

- - Befriending and providing on-going support to Vintage Volunteers who may need additional help in identifying or accessing their perfect opportunity
- - Promoting the health and wellbeing benefits of volunteering and champion volunteering locally amongst the 60+ community
- - Signposting potential 60+ volunteers into the Vintage Volunteer team
- - Attending Vintage Volunteer Forums and supporting the team to promote the project and its objectives
- - Identify local development needs i.e. gaps in service. And in collaboration with the Vintage Volunteer team and other partners, champion change in their community

Skills/experience

To become a Vintage Volunteer Champion there's no need for specific skills or qualifications but the following would be great;

- - Good listening and communication skills
- - The ability to engage with a diverse range of people
- - A non-judgemental and empathetic attitude
- - An understanding of the need for confidentiality
- - Be reliable and flexible enough to attend events and Forums
- - Be encouraging and motivational
- - Good organisational skills
- - And of course, be passionate about volunteering

Benefits

You will be supported by the Vintage Volunteers team and provided with regular supervision and support. All our Champions will also be offered the opportunity to enrol in a Mentoring and Coaching training course with a recognised formal qualification.

Expenses

Any expenses incurred by a volunteer because of their volunteering will be reimbursed in accordance with our expenses policy. Further details of this policy are contained in our Volunteer Handbook and are available upon request.

Recruitment process

Given our commitment to diversity, we actively promote volunteering and recruit potential volunteers using a variety of media and means. We interview all prospective volunteers and successful candidates will receive an induction to introduce them to the project and to their role in particular. Please note, we reserve the right to close or extend this position depending on application numbers. Therefore, we would urge you to apply as soon as possible.
