Job purpose

The role of Software tester will be intrinsic to the function of the projects delivery team and will enhance the capability of the IT department to successfully deliver software implementations. You will be key member of the projects delivery team, testing all in-house developed applications and externally sourced/third party applications. You will have experience of both traditional testing methodologies and testing within an AGILE software delivery environment. With a focus on building quality in to our applications and introducing testing efficiencies such as automation where possible. You will be working closely with the project delivery team on development and maintenance projects and with developers to ensure quality is built into the implementation of our IT systems within challenging timescales. You will plan and prepare for the testing of new developments and to repeat & review existing test documentation for system upgrades and regression tests. You will work with all the different business units within the company to identify testing requirements and provide feedback.
You will be a logical tester with a strong understanding of software systems and the whole development life cycle, a self starter with a passion for quality who works well within a team and on their own.


  • Working with the project delivery team to successfully deliver multiple software implementation projects, through planned testing, working with Business Analysts to match testing to requirements and liaising with Business users in managing UAT;
  • Liaison with development throughout the pre-testing phase, including review of requirements and development specifications, in support of test planning and preparation.
  • Test design and preparation of detailed test plans and scripts for functional, system, regression and performance testing;
  • Liaison with technical staff and development teams on set-up and maintenance of test environments;
  • Preparation and/or peer review of detailed manual test plans and scripts;
  • Executing of manual test scripts, recording results and raising incidents for test failures;
  • Preparation of test metrics and status reporting throughout the test window;
  • Running and executing testing on multiple projects in parallel;
  • Identifying issues and risks related to testing and escalating these as appropriate;
  • Completion of assigned testing to delivery targets and milestones;
  • Completion of testing to software quality targets;
  • Handover tested applications to the support team.
  • Liaising with customers and Project/Product Management during UAT, ensuring that issues are replicated and resolved in a timely manner.
  • Defining test processes and procedures and supporting Business requirements in the continuous development of these.
  • Preparation of test reports, including support hand-over notes at completion of testing.

Knowledge skills & experience

  • ISEB/ISTQB Software Testing;
  • ITIL v3 (Desirable);
  • PRINCE 2 foundation (Desirable);
  • Agile Principles and Values (Desirable);
  • MS Test Manager and VSTS (Desirable);
  • Minimum 1-2 years testing experience including test development with a good knowledge of IT test principles and awareness of the full Software Development Lifecycle;
  • Working in AGILE software development teams (Desirable);
  • Web testing (Desirable);
  • Multiple component, multiple server system testing;
  • Database based system testing i.e. SQL Server;
  • Testing within the Microsoft development stack;
  • Use of fault logging and tracking applications;
  • Use of automated test tools (Desirable);
  • Development / configuration of test support tools;
  • Testing within AGILE development techniques (Desirable);
  • Setup and use of automated testing tools (e.g. Selenium, Loadrunner) (Desirable);
  • Test environment management and test release management (Desirable);
  • Ensuring test script coverage against business requirements (Desirable).
