POST TITLE: Learning Support Assistant

SCALE 2 GBP7.79 per hour

AREA: Student Services

PURPOSE OF JOB: To work as part of the Learning Support Team in supporting students to progress in their studies.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Student Services Manager

The post holder must at all times, carry out his/her responsibilities in accordance with College policies.


Learning Support Assistants can offer 1:1 or small group support to suit the learners and help in the classroom as and when required.

Learning Support Assistants provide a complementary service to teachers and other staff, addressing the needs of learners who require assistance in overcoming barriers to learning in order to achieve their full potential.

They work with a range of learners, but give priority to those who need the most help, especially those experiencing multiple disadvantages. The variety of issues covered is vast, ranging from managing challenging behaviour to working with students experiencing difficulties with Literacy and Numeracy.

Role of a Learning support Assistant

Learner Support Assistants work with students with a wide range of learning difficulties and disabilities and are responsible for:

Assisting with the entry/enrolment and induction of students with learning difficulties and disabilities onto College programmes and the assessment of student support needs.

Assisting with the delivery of learning programmes and activities in the classroom/workshop or off-site learning situations.

Meeting the personal support needs of individual students, in the classroom and out of class situations.

Assisting students to access medication under the direct guidance of the Line Manager and the Health and Safety Officer and in accordance with procedures outlined in individual Risk Assessments.

Contributing to the assessment and review of students progress and achievement and attend meetings as appropriate.

The maintenance of equipment and resources, as directed by the Line Manager or Course Leader.

Liaising with students, families and external agencies as directed by the Line Manager or Course Leader.

Routine administrative tasks associated with the above duties, including Individual Learning Plans and daily work logs.

Varying the nature of degree of support according to the subject area, level of cover, student maturity and other additional support needs to promote independent learning.

Contributing to the development of Additional Support Services and procedures across the College, including involvement in staff training and development.

Liaising with appropriate additional support and mainstream staff to promote the inclusion of students with learning difficulties and disabilities according to College policy.

Maintaining a safe and healthy working environment in accordance with the College's Health and Safety policies and procedures, in association with other colleagues and managers.

Operating within the College's equality and diversity framework to achieve College targets and establish parity of esteem.

Supporting exams department in carrying out between 10 and 20 hours of invigilation per academic year.

To undertake any other duties and responsibilities as may be determined after negotiation between management, the post holder and appropriate Trade Unions.

Quality Assurance

Definition: quality assurance is the systematic process of checking to see whether a service is meeting specified requirements.

  • LSA's will be observed and graded under the College Learning Observation Policy to ensure quality standards are being met.
  • LSA's will be assessed via learning walks throughout the academic year under the College Learning Observation Policy .
  • LSA's will be expected to attend and participate in role specific continuous professional development e.g. for example safeguarding training, PREVENT agenda.
