About the Team

RDM (Retail Development Management) team focusses on retail development, management and major restructuring of retail schemes. The team is structured with senior fee earners, and paralegals, and takes a streamlined approach to the work it undertakes.

Main Purpose of the Job

Our business is growing and we are looking for a Legal Executive/Associate to join the team to provide support to and work within the retail development lettings ("RDM") sub-team which sits within the commercial development and investment team. This team focusses on retail development and major restructuring of retail schemes.

The team is structured with senior fee earners, and paralegals, and takes a streamlined approach to the work it undertakes. There is lots of client contact and an opportunity to get closely involved with often transformational city centre projects.

The work is challenging, varied, and interesting and will provide opportunity to develop and nurture solid client relationships, as well as work closely with others within the team and firm.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The role will have a broad high value, high profile property development and investors focus across all sectors and will involve:

Negotiation of development agreement for leases and leases for a number of schemes. This will be supported by the team structure and processes but the role will be hands on dealing directly with the negotiations and liaising with the client team.
The role will include assisting in scheme set up and will also the periodic attendance at scheme lettings meetings and project workshops.
Supporting the wider CDI team on retail scheme acquisitions funding and disposals of the retail schemes.
Some related management work linked to the schemes the team are acting on (largely by way of supervision of the paralegals within RDM).
Subject to capacity, there will also be the opportunity to support the wider CDI team by assisting on matters.
Including (as applicable) all title investigation, searches, enquiries, drafting, negotiation, research, analysis, liaison with clients agents and third parties, meetings reporting on title, indemnity insurance arrangements, communications, project management, administration and financial aspects, Land Registry or other applications (including SDLT) and post completion formalities as we well as understanding and delivering on clients' requirements and expectations, (including all reporting requirements);
Marketing, group practice development and client entertainment/training events and activities.

Key skills and experience

You should be able to:

Experience of landlord and tenant work (acting for either landlord or tenant) with development, would be an advantage but is not essential
Manage your own caseload to tight deadlines, remain calm under pressure and prioritise your workload effectively;
Work in a team environment (which may involve working as part of a bigger project team) with supervision of junior members within the RDM team and generally to support your colleagues:
Give clear, practical advice with sound commercial judgement and swift accurate implementation of instructions;
Negotiate effectively and deliver commercial solutions for our clients;
Carry out title reviews, lease reviews prepare report on title and reports on lease;
Communicate appropriately at all levels within the team and the wider business as well as with clients, agents and other parties;
Work closely and collaboratively with Gowling WLG team members, the clients and their professional team (e.g. agents, surveyors, consultants, accountants and others);
Prepare for and participate in marketing functions as part of added value services to our clients;
Delegate where appropriate and supervise and mentor more junior fee earner team members (e.g. Paralegals)

You should have:

An effective, engaging and professional communication style with advanced interpersonal skills;
A proactive approach with the confidence to use your own initiative;
Effective time management and organisational skills;
Problem solving and analytical skills;
Project management skills (would be beneficial but not essential);
Strong IT/keyboard skills;
