Hours: 40 Hours per week

The Role:
*This is a responsible position within the Vehicle Engineering Department
*Our vehicle engineering capabilities extend from quick turnaround concept design and demonstrator vehicle builds, through to turnkey volume passenger car programmes, including full production design, prototype build, test, development and validation responsibility.
*Projects are undertaken on behalf of either product development teams within the company, or directly for an external client.

*Reporting to the Vehicle Engineering Manager, the Test and Development Team Leader will lead vehicle test and development planning, homologation and prototype build management.
*This is an excellent opportunity to be involved in a dynamic department and organisation, supporting a variety of project based work and leading a small team within Ricardo in delivering these activities and developing internal capability to support project requirements.
*Projects can range from component or system test and development, to entirely new concept vehicles.
*As such, experience in a test and development based role is essential, preferably with experience of planning and leading whole vehicle test, development and homologation activities.
*A broad base of technical experience is needed, preferably with a variety of conventional powertrains and hybrid electric vehicles.

*The position will likely involve some travel in the UK and possibly abroad, and occasionally the employee may be required to work at client sites.

Key responsibilities
*Detailed planning and management of project test and validation deliverables and timing, compiling both rig and vehicle test plans in conjunction with key stakeholders
*Work closely with the vehicle workshop team on site to procure materials, plan and manage on-time and high-quality prototype build and instrumentation activity
*Specification, management and reporting of vehicle and rig testing at both the company and at offsite vehicle testing facilities
*Ensure that homologation test requirements are planned, tested and validated at a whole vehicle level
*Support and deliver as applicable test and development standards, guidelines and procedures
*Technical lead in developing prototype build, test and development opportunities and preparing compelling proposals (documentation, plans, costing and commercial package) in response to Request for Quotations
*Mentoring team members and identifying requirements for skills development

Experience and Skills
*The successful applicant will be highly self-motivated, with strong leadership and the ability to co-ordinate and deliver projects to meet customer requirements.
*They will have a minimum of 10 years automotive experience, with significant recent experience in managing whole vehicle and rig test development and prototype build activities, probably for an OEM, test house, or automotive consultancy.
*The job involves a significant amount of interaction with other engineers and technicians; hence the ability to work with and communicate well on a technical level is important.
*They will be comfortable in meeting new customers and developing relationships, operating within the vehicle engineering team and working with other departments to win and deliver vehicle engineering projects.
*A minimum of 10 years automotive experience
*Significant recent experience in managing vehicle development activities and test plans, working with internal and external customers and suppliers
*Strong and broad-based technical knowledge of vehicles, engines, chassis, transmission and driveline systems
*Excellent task management skills, the ability to coordinate and successfully deliver projects
*Strong interpersonal and communication skills at all levels
*A team player with strong leadership abilities
*Confident and robust character with a drive and motivation to succeed
*An ability to work under pressure and tight timescales
*Clean driving licence

Preferable skills:
*Experience of planning and coordinating prototype procurement and build activity
*Experience of planning and specifying whole vehicle homologation requirements
*Experience of managing test instrumentation and rig specification and installation
*Experience of test data analysis and interpretation
*Excellent problem-solving skills including 8D, root cause analysis, etc.
*The ability to produce thorough but concise technical reports
* The ability to develop compelling proposals for potential customers
*Usual MS Office skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
*High degree of flexibility and willingness to travel
