A West Bromwich based mechanical engineering company is currently looking for a Production Design Engineer to support the business by ensuring maximum efficiency and in all operations. The successful Production Design Engineer will be working alongside the existing team to support the design and production of new parts. This role will start ASAP and will initially be on a 3-6 month contract with the possibility of extension dependent on business needs.

Duties and responsibilities

• Create, modify or improve engineering processes and create / modify Bill of Material (boM) as required
• Create detail manufacturing plans defining the method of manufacture taking due consideration of customer specification, tooling, quality / inspection, costs and production processes
• Assist with creating Process Qualification documents for new and existing customers
• Embody customer modifications to existing processes
• Conduct cost / benefit analysis for changes to processes and/or equipment
• Identify and implement process improvement / cycle time reduction
• Ensure processes contribute to a safe working environment
• Creating and maintaining accurate documentation of tool drawings, design concepts, shop orders, and concepts in accordance with R&D and quality assurance functions
• Providing engineering support in production department to trouble shoot and resolve technical problems
• Coordinating work with tool room personnel, assigned technicians and outside vendors
• Work with process timing data for costing work of current components
• Work with customer services for technical enquiries with assistance from Engineering function
• Problem solving and resolving engineering applications by adding value through technical expertise and knowledge
• Pattern design, material sourcing and product sourcing will be a requirement.
• Documentation of all product and prototype development is an essential part of every core product or bespoke product design project
• Formal technical files are developed for historical reference and compliance with BS, EN ISO quality requirements for design / product verification
• To manage and report engineering projects from concept to manufacture, including the development of commercial studies and reports
• Manage a variety of engineering / development / design based projects in line with national and company procedures
• Maintain good technical file management with the day to day running of the department
• General organization and housekeeping of the department
• Using 3D modelling software, develop virtual solution for evaluation, client presentations, and reduce the time required for completing the product development process
• Produce engineering production drawings to the current standards. Manage all drawing production / issue and maintenance to the correct procedures as set down in the company quality manual
• Ensure that all technical files, correspondence and British Standards are maintained in line with company standards, requirements and quality procedures
• Technical report writing, test report writing and stress calculations are required as basic skills in product design processes
• Liaising with subcontractors and additional sources during design process
• Undergo site visits to ensure products are being used effectively and correctly
• Abide by site health and safety and environment procedures
• Comply with all safe working procedures, practices, rules and regulations and instructions from supervision
• Ensure safety footwear, plus other PPE appropriate to task

Skills and experience

• A minimum of 2 years’ experience in mechanical manufacturing environment and a minimum of ONC in Mechanical Engineering (HNC is preferred) OR
• Have recently graduated from University with a degree in a Mechanical Engineering discipline
• Ability to interrogate CAD drawings
• Excellent experience and knowledge using in AutoCad Inventor
• Product design experience
• Manufacturing experience
• Knowledge of cable management systems and their application
• Experience in Routes and Bill creation for production
• Knowledge of manufacturing concepts
• Ability to grasp modern technology quickly
• Understanding of costing techniques and cost control
• Clear understanding of continuous improvement and lean manufacturing principles
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Proficient in Microsoft Office
