Environmental Specialist

Siemens Rail Automation (SRA) is looking for an Environmental Specialist to be based in either ourBirmingham, Chippenham or Manchester office. Whilst being based out of an office, the Specialist will also work from our depots to assist in delivering projects from the Highlands of Scotland to Crossrail in London. The role will require travel across the UK.

The Specialist will provide operational environmental management support and guidance for our railway projects. They will assist in the initial development of environmental documentation followed by facilitating the implementation within project teams.

Key Activities & Principle Accountabilities

- Develop environmental documentation including Environmental Management Plans (EMPs), Environmental Risk Assessments (ERAs) and Site Waste Management Plans
- Provide input to project planning in relation to ecology, contaminated land, waste, water and pollution prevention.
- Provide training sessions to the business to raise awareness of environmental risks and opportunites
- Identify and assist in the implementation of environmental opportunities
- Facilitate the integration of environmental documentation within the project team
- Manage and undertake environmental inspections and audits of projects and offices/depots
- Support any environmental incident investigations
- Develop and assist in the delivery of environment training to staff and contractors
- Review new environmental legislation and best practice
- Support the business in ensuring compliance against statutory, project and other identified requirements
- Provide technical environmental advice to all areas of the business (e.g. bidding, commercial, construction, design, etc) and interface with the client / other contractors

What do I need to qualify for this role?

- Degree or diploma in environmental management or equivalent
- Professional experience within environmental management with significant experience in ecology desirable
- Practitioner Membership of IEMA (or equivalent)
- Ability to draft and prepare formal reports, with previous experience preparing Environmental Management plans
- Effective in influencing colleagues across all levels of the organisation
- Good knowledge of ecology, waste management or contaminated land management with general knowledge of other areas such as air quality, water courses, historical issues.
- Experience within construction industry with rail industry experience preferable
- Ability to engage with both office and site based personnel and provide constructive feedback and guidance on environmental management issues
- Good attention to detail
- GIS skills are desirable
- Actively engaged in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities as training will be provided

The position will report to the Environment Manager (based in Chippenham) and work closely with Environment, Health and Safety Specialists, design team and construction teams across the UK.

The position is based on a 37 hour working week with occasional weekend working. UK travel will be required to project sites, depots and/or other offices.
