Structural Design Engineer is required to join a world class engineering client. Our client has an Advanced Engineering (Research) department and is looking for an experienced and ambitious Principal Structures Design Engineer to join a dedicated project team.

You will be working on a new vehicle concept and you will lead all aspects of the structural design of this new vehicle from concept generation through to detailed design and Engineering Sign Off. You will develop structural concepts and evaluate them using simulation and hand calculations. You will work closely with the Group Structures team and the Simulation resources at the IDC to validate your designs and ensure they meet the necessary standards.

Structural Design Engineer Role:

Develop concept feasibility studies and structural design of new product ideas using Siemens NX.

Design the layout of the machine to ensure structural, performance and packaging constraints are achieved.

Understand 'real life' machine use and specify appropriate FEA load-cases.

Ensuring FEA modelling is done to the correct standard using your own skills and external parties where required.

Carry out design calculations where required.

Prepare Technical Review documentation.

Oversee the detailed design to your specification.

Coordinate with the Group Structures team to develop a robust validation plan, (FEA, Strain Gauge and Rigs).

Own and maintain the timing plan for the structures subsystems.

Ensure prototype parts are produced and delivered to plan.

Ensure the quality of prototype parts are to standard.

Interpret rig, strain gauge data to make design improvements and validate.

Compile and issue technical documentation.

Advise the Project Leader on structures status and issues.

Structural Design Engineer Requirements:

You will have a wide range of experience in structural design and analysis, ideally being educated to a degree level and preferably with the focus being either structural or mechanical engineering.

This is a hands-on role suitable for an experienced Design Engineer who will be able to demonstrate a proven track record of delivering finished structural designs to market. You will be passionate about structures and enjoy developing creative design solutions.

Essential Requirements:

Excellent CAD skills (We use Siemens NX but experience with other tools is acceptable).

Excellent FEA Analysis skills (We use ANSYS but experience with other tools is acceptable).

Ability to understand and model the impact of product geometry on the loads in the structure.

Ability to generate creative and efficient structural design solutions.

Good knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication technologies used in off-highway industry.

Ability to perform appropriate hand calculations.

Ability to interpret results from simulation models and develop design solutions.

Ability to select and develop appropriate load-cases to replicate field duty cycles.

Desirable requirements:

Interpretation of physical test results (strain gauge or rig) to improve simulation model correlation and develop improved designs.

Specifying the optimum position for strain gauges.

Specification of physical validation test programmes.

Ability to specify suitable test rigs, load cases.

Alongside the technical elements we are looking for a well-motivated individual with strong leadership skills and the ability to work with a wide range of people across multiple disciplines.

As a Principal Engineer you will be expected to mentor and encourage less experienced members of the team.

Structural Design Engineer Benefits:

Our client offers a competitive salary, pension scheme, Healthcare and relocation assistance where applicable. Opportunities exist for personal development and career progression. 33 days holiday increasing with service to 38 days. Fully supportive of professional development such as IMeche, IET or Chartered Engineer status.
