Capita's partnership with Birmingham City Council, Service Birmingham is looking for a Network Engineer 3rd Line for a 3-month contract based in Birmingham. This role is part of the Network Services Team and they are looking for a highly motivated individual to support the management and implementation of the Birmingham City Council Network.

Service Birmingham supports a complex MPLS network architecture and requires a suitably qualified engineer to maintain and develop the network in line with the business requirements. This is an exciting opportunity to work on leading edge network technologies within a highly skilled team in a challenging environment

Responsibilities:

  • To provide Tier 3 support for the day to day running of the of the Core MPLS Network function, Internet Services, Load-balancing and Firewall Services.

  • To take a lead role in troubleshooting technical problems, challenges and complexities that exist within the Core Network.

  • To support the Network Services Release Management Policy for the Core MPLS network. This includes release validation, maintenance, configuration, installation and deployment of the appropriate levels of Network Software

  • To support the lead within Network Services on the development of future technologies and customer requirements in line with business requirements.

  • To take joint responsibility for Network Services Lab Environment. This includes accountability for full UAT testing and development of any new Core Network development, changes and implementations.

  • To work as part of a dedicated team together with Capita/Cisco in providing 3rd level Network Support for the MPLS network.

  • To lead on the core wireless infrastructure components, including wireless LAN controllers and authentication servers, and third party managed wireless services.

  • To be able support ad hoc network problems and queries within the Network Services team

Level of supervision:

  • Plan own work to ensure the meeting of defined objectives as an individual and the team.

Essential experience/skills:

  • In depth understanding of Cisco routing and switching technology, MPLS, BGP, IS-IS, and EIGRP.

  • Proven network-related project implementation skills and experience.

  • Tier 3 trouble-shooting skills and system monitoring/reporting experience using a suitable network monitoring application.

  • In depth understanding of Internet BGP/LIR installation and maintenance.

  • Fundamental understanding of CISCO ACE load-balancers, F5 load-balancers.

  • Fundamental understanding of Checkpoint and Juniper firewall technologies.

  • Proven track record of configuring and troubleshooting Cisco wireless LAN controllers at an enterprise level.

  • Experience in configuring Cisco ISE and troubleshooting user based issues.

  • Fundamental understanding of configuring and troubleshooting TACACs implementations.

  • Self-motivated for all aspects of responsibilities.

  • Diligent in the production and support of network and project documentation.

  • Experience of working within a busy customer/stakeholder environment.

  • Ability to help define, document, enforce and follow procedures/processes.

  • Excellent verbal communication skills to explain technical solutions to customers in a clear and concise manner.

  • Ability to deal with customers in a calm and controlled manner.

  • Ability to work logically, quickly and accurately.

  • Ability to develop professionally on a continuous basis as an individual and team.

  • Demonstrate a systematic and analytical approach to problem solving.

  • Proven experience of working in a highly effective support role within a complex network environment.

    Desired experience/skills:

  • Qualifications or continuing pursuit of, relevant vendor's certification programme (e.g. Cisco (minimum CCNA, ideally CCNP, Checkpoint).

    Preferably educated to Degree level.
