Our client is the largest independent convenience store operator in the UK with a turnover of £1.3 billion and over 8,200 employees in total across all of their divisions in England and Wales.

With a turnover of £340 million, they are the third largest company of its kind in the UK market. The division operates 14 cash & carry sites across England and Wales and has more than 400 retail club store members. They also run a national food distribution service which serves delivered customers across the UK via an 84,000 sq ft distribution depot at Apex II in Great Bridge, West Midlands. The division employs 700 people.

It's through their 'putting people first' philosophy that they are able to successfully lead, compete and operate within the fast paced Wholesale and Retail Market.

About the role:

The Commercial Manager is responsible for all aspects of their categories on both a direct and indirect basis.


- Maximise revenue from suppliers through effective negotiation and the development of new initiatives Interpreting appropriate market research activity, and recommending actions for improvement
- Negotiate annual Joint Business Plans with all category suppliers and ensure continued increase investment
- Negotiate a planned programme of promotional activity which is effective, competitive and supplier funded
- Ensuring implementation and activation of all JBP initiatives Negotiate and evaluate strategic purchasing opportunities / volume deals and execute across the estate as appropriate
- Effective management of all indirect income streams and invoicing through Commercial Executives / Commercial Assistants
- Ensure the Wholesale and Wholesale Distribution division offers an up to date and appropriate range that reflects consumer market trends
- Final sign off of Promotional and POS material produced internally and externally
- Regular reporting against key performance targets and objectives contributing towards required improvement where appropriate Identifying opportunities for improved efficiency within the trading and stock control functions
- Demonstrate best practice supplier management techniques
- Meeting agreed timescales and deadlines with regard to internal and external trading information, reports and documentation
- Ensuring that all pricing and administrative functions are processed accurately and in a timely manner
- Manage central distribution agreements for the business
- Manage central distribution agreements to supply other wholesalers and retailers
- Explore & promote opportunities for distribution across the supplier account base
- Negotiation and funding for customer specific contracts and prices
- Opportunities and negotiation for supplier funded repacking opportunities
- Ensuring that the procurement function works towards 100% availability of SKU's across multiple wholesale and distribution sites
- Working internally and externally with suppliers to forecast stock requirements (including promotions)
- Identifying and managing excess / obsolete stocks across the business in order to minimise levels of product wastage Working to stock holding targets
- Assisting with the preparation of annual budgets
- Oversee stock holding targets and reduce losses through effective stock management
- Will be required to travel to sites other than normal place of work
- May be required to stay away from home overnight or attend evening events
- May have access to company car

About you:

- High level of numeracy and literacy
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft packages
- Educated to degree level is desirable
- Previous experience of people management experience, with a track record of success
- Competent at managing process to deliver effective proceduresl
- Demonstrable experience in managing categories from procurement of stock through to marketing and delivery to the consumer
- Excellent industry knowledge, including specific product knowledge, to deliver a targeted offering to customers is a must
- Experience of negotiating with senior personnel within 'Blue Chip' suppliers
- Effective at implementing strategy for the Trading / stock control function
- Demonstrable track record of exceeding targets is preferred
- Demonstrable purchasing experience is desirable
- Strong negotiation skills
