ROLE: Embedded Software Engineers

LOCATION: Birmingham, Midlands

SALARY: £30,000 - £40,000 DOE + benefits

The company:

We are acting on behalf of a very successful and highly innovative medical devices manufacturer in the Birmingham area. This company has created waves on a global scale with their innovation and due to steady growth and success, they now have several positions on offer within their technical team.

The role:

We are looking for an experienced embedded software engineer who has ideally worked within the life-science / pharmaceutical / medical sector. The primary function of this role is to provide significant contribution to the creation and evolution of software related to the company’s products. You will also work with product development and quality assurance to ensure that the software is compliant with relevant regulations and standards.

The person:

  • You will have an engineering degree: BSc (Hons) or BEng (Hons) though we will accept applications from people with professional experience;
  • You will have a track record of creating new software designs (small to medium scale);
  • You will have experience of working to the requirements of a Quality Management System compliant with relevant international standards (ISO 9001 and/or ISO 13485 / EN 62304 covering the full software product lifecycle

Essential skills and experience:

  • Solid knowledge and practical use of Embedded C is essential for this role and other scripting languages would be beneficial;
  • You will have experience of real time, safety critical or high integrity environments;
  • Requirement authoring, maintenance, review and tracing;
  • Identifying risk mitigation scenarios and design of risk control measures (in conjunction with the Risk Manager and Software Architect);
  • Software implementation to agreed software designs in compliance with coding standards;
  • Development of appropriate code tests prior to integration testing;
  • Resolving bugs identified in conjunction with the software team;
  • Supporting triage process for prioritisation and characterisation of bugs;
  • Supporting software quality initiatives such as software inspections and tool qualification;
  • Strong internal and external stakeholder engagement

Technical requirements:

  • Software Requirements Documentation
  • Embedded Real Time Software Architecture & Design
  • Software Design and Interface Documentation
  • Programming Languages:
    • MISRA C
    • C# / .NET for Windows CE and PC applications
    • Microcontrollers - STM32 family, using IAR tool chain (or equivalent)
    • Multithreaded application development: FreeRTOS / SafeRTOS (or equivalent)

Familiarity with some of the following:

  • Requirements Management & Traceability: DOORS, CaliberRM (or equivalent)
  • Use of Enterprise Architect, Doxygen tools
  • Use of Design Patterns
  • User Interface Libraries & Design Tools (Visual Studio or equivalent)
  • Static Analysis Tools: PC-Lint (or similar)
  • Software Unit Testing: VectorCAST (or similar)
  • Bug-Tracking & Configuration Management: SubVersion & JIRA or equivalent
  • Agile/SCRUM software delivery methodology
