Gas Path Function Lead
POSTING END DATE: 26/10/2017
ADVERTISED SALARY: £40,000 - £50,000
An ever-evolving heritage. A truly exciting future. Two of the world's most iconic brands. Jaguar Land Rover is revered across the globe. Continually pushing the boundaries of innovation and redefining the benchmark for excellence, we set the standards others want to follow. We want to keep it that way too. Which is where you join the journey.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Using state-of-the-art facilities, you'll provide the power behind our vehicles working in our Powertrain Engineering team. You'll find the ideal balance between performance and sustainability, while responding to the environmental issues that shape our industry.
The Powertrain Gas Path Function Layer assures the integrity of the intake charge and exhaust flows around the vehicle, in order to deliver a system which simultaneously meets all of its targeted Attribute performance levels. As such, this role often involves undertaking work to balance and address mutually competing, or conflicting, requirements and targets, through both virtual and physical test methods. Due to the significant level of control needed for the engine's gas flows, this particular role requires very close integration with the Powertrain Calibration and Control teams.
The Function Leader oversees the Gas Path activities for all Programmes, both Unit and Vehicle. It is the Function Leader's responsibility to ensure the development of mutually compatible targets between Base Engines, Powertrain PTSE and Vehicle Engineering teams, and the relevant Calibration and Controls teams. This often involves negotiation with Attribute teams, such as Base Engine Performance & Economy, Powertrain NVH, PED and TASE, as well as the relevant Programme teams.
To achieve these aims, the Function Leader is expected to manage the workload across a small team of engineers. It is expected that the Function Leader will drive issues through to resolution with the agreement of Senior Managers and Chief Engineers, as appropriate.
As a relatively new team, the Function Leader has significant scope to influence and shape how the team best supports programme activities in the future, and it is expected that Method Development and refinement will constitute a major part of the role in the near term.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
With a passion for the automotive industry, you'll demonstrate a good knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid flows along with an understanding of the main strategies for controlling air and exhaust flows within an engine, the key limitations which apply to the components within the system, and the influence of environmental factors on that control strategy. You'll have an awareness of 1D and 3D computational fluid dynamics - mostly around definition of boundary conditions and have knowledge of Failure Mode Avoidance techniques, including (but not limited to) Boundary Diagrams, Interface Analyses, P-Diagrams and Robustness Checklists, Fault Trees, and Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEAs)
In addition, you'll have a logical approach to problem solving, strong prioritisation and workload planning skills. Excellent communication, negotiation and team working skills, including the ability to condense complex problems into key messages for succinct communication with relevant stakeholders at multiple levels within the organisational structure are essential, as is the ability to work under own direction, and delegate effectively.
Bring all this to the home of premium innovation, and you'll find the opportunities to further your career with a world-class team, a discounted car purchase and lease scheme for you and your family, membership of a competitive pension plan and performance related bonus scheme. All this and more makes Jaguar Land Rover the perfect place to continue your journey.
