Commissioning Engineer

Role: Commissioning Engineer

Location – Birmingham (Field Role)

Salary: £35000pa + overtime/van/phone/life cover/health cover

Our Client is a leading worldwide Engineering company that are seeking a Commissioning Engineer that can repair heavy industrial electrical and Mechanical Machinery on such things as gearboxes, drive motors, Servos, PLC Controls, and can help with the design and commission variable speed drives and other automation equipment. This role would suit an engineer who has passed there apprenticeship and has 2-5 years experience in the commissioning and maintenance work. Must has 17th Edition IEE Wiring regs.

The Commissioning Engineer will have knowledge of

  • Attending customer breakdowns relating to electronic drives and controls, electrical and mechanical faults, taking guidance from Team Leader with the aim of returning customer equipment to service.

  • Attend customer sites for the maintenance, installation, service and commission of variable speed drives, DC drives and other automation equipment including PLCs and Controls.

  • Collecting required information from customer sites to allow specification and selection of AC inverters, AC soft-starters and DC drives depending on application.

  • Fault finding and commissioning of servo systems, again taking guidance from support mechanisms in place.

  • Clear communication with supervision to ensure jobs are properly planned and that the appropriate level of service is provided to our customers.

  • Complete risk assessments and method statements prior to undertaking work activities.

  • Ensure adherence to Health and Safety responsibilities at all times, following all appropriate procedures and using the appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Carry out training to develop experience with control and automation, in line with customer and Sulzer requirements.

  • Flexibility towards working overtime at short notice to suit customer needs.

  • Ensuring that company policies and procedures are followed and that work is completed in line with the requirements set out ISO9001, ISO14001 and BS OHSA S18001.

  • Be familiar with environmental aspects of activities undertaken in the role and the procedures and processes underpinning.

  • Ensure that the work area is kept clean and tidy in accordance with company initiatives such as LEAN and in accordance with health and safety requirements.


  • A time served Electrical / Electronic Engineer preferably with Mechanical experience.

  • 17th Edition IEE wiring regulations certification.

  • A good knowledge of motors, generators, alternators and other rotating equipment.

  • A knowledge of AC VSD’s and DC drives including modes of operation.

  • Ability to problem solve with a view to fault finding in an industrial environment.

  • Knowledge of PLC and HMI equipment and controls, preferably Siemens S7 and Mitsubishi FX, A and Q series.

  • Ability to read, follow and understand machine electrical and mechanical drawings.
