The Client Our client is seeking an experienced Engineer to join and lead our Civil, Structural and Architecture team in their Industry business. They work on cradle to grave solutions for facilities for some of the world's leading pharmaceutical, biotech, process and FMCG companies with a team of industry experts. The Associate Director will be responsible for the management of the civil, structural and architectural discipline and the provision of professional engineering expertise in the chemical, pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, science and technology, food, energy and other process related industries. You will manage the full range of professional civil, structural and architectural engineering activities requiring a high degree of technical judgment and resourcefulness in the planning, engineering, specification, installation and commissioning of process industry projects. Also, conceptual designs, front end studies and engineering consultancy. The role is to ensure a co-ordinated approach to delivering engineering quality, technical excellence and innovative design across projects for the civil, structural & architectural discipline. Mainly office based in Birmingham but with some UK and overseas travel. The Associate Director CS&A reports to the Engineering/Technical Director. The Role A typical working week would include tasks such as: - To ensure that standards of excellence in civil, structural and architectural engineering and design are radically and continuously improved in a way which will differentiate the company from its competitors. - To provide inspirational leadership to facilitate technical innovation and growth. - To ensure that the engineering and design service provided is delivered on time, to cost and to the standards required by the client. - Discipline resourcing to meet project needs. Recruitment of permanent and contract staff. - Functional line management for engineers, designers and graduates. - Staff development and training including Performance Development Reviews and Line Manager Safety Reviews. - Support/generate cost and manhours estimates for proposals, studies and projects. - Act as Lead Engineer on selected projects controlling design, specifications, costs, hours, quality and programme. - Approvals and management of engineering and design work. - To develop and grow the department such that there is a natural strength in depth of engineering expertise including the emerging technology areas. - Ensure regular technical audits and design reviews are undertaken on projects. - Provide up to date technical advice to staff and customers on standards, construction materials and construction techniques. - Make technical presentations internally, to clients and to outside organisations. - To ensure that safety issues are fully considered within projects including CDM duties as Designer and Principal Designer. - Ensure compliance to Building Regulations, environmental standards, sustainability and GMP. - Development and maintenance of departmental engineering design standards and procedures Experience and Qualifications Required We would be interested hearing from candidates with the following attributes: - Significant experience in civil, structural and architectural engineering on capital projects with some experience of a responsible position of managing a team of engineers - Expert knowledge and experience of engineering design in fine chemicals, science and technology, pharmaceutical and/or biopharmaceutical industries. - Practical understanding of the implications of cGMP and validation requirements. - Operating experience within primary pharmaceutical, biotechnology or fine chemical. Also experience of having worked within a contracting organisation. - Knowledge of applicable regulatory standards, policies, and codes of practice. - Effective management of staff and delegation of tasks and authority. Ability to assess and prioritise multiple tasks, projects and demands. - Proven analytical skills. Able to implement solutions exceeding customer expectations. - Confident and articulate with clients including proficient presentation skills. - Good interpersonal skills and able to work as part of a multi-discipline team. Versatile, reliable and resourceful. - Personal qualities that include the ability to gain trust and confidence with a variety of clients as well as within the company. - Customer focus, commitment to quality management and problem solving. - Ability to operate as a lead engineer on a variety of projects. - Experience and good understanding of Designer and Principal Designer responsibilities under CDM Regulations, design safety procedures and design risk assessment.
