Supporting people who live with dementia or other mental or psychological health issues is no easy task and helping them to lead more independent lives is even more so.

So at The ExtraCare Charitable Trust, we've developed our own position, the Locksmith (Dementia Support Worker). The Enriched Opportunities Programme Locksmith (Dementia Support Worker) is named to describe a role that, finds the key, unlocks people’s potential and unpicks issues in their present experience of life. Someone who can piece together someone's past, their likes and dislikes, from how they like their tea, to the essentials of family, their working lives, to hobbies and ambitions. Pulling this background together can help us give people a more fulfilling and satisfying life.

We are currently recruiting for a Community Locksmith (Dementia Support Worker) to join our head office team in Coventry on a temporary fixed term 3 year contract. As a Community Locksmith, you will be required to visit customers in their own homes, therefore you will be required to be a car owner, have the ability to drive and have a full driving licence. You will provide short term support to older people in Coventry, living with dementia, who have recently been discharged from hospital. We will reward the successful Dementia Support Worker with £10.27 per hour for this 37.5 hours per week role.

The Dementia Support Worker, will work with individuals who experience dementia (or other mental health problems) and help them to take control of their social, recreational, psychological and spiritual well being. Because of the impairments people experience, they can be in danger of being or feeling excluded from life in and around the Community. Your job as the Dementia Support Worker, will be to make sure this happens less and ideally not at all.

The role of the Dementia Support Worker was developed with Bradford University and is an essential pillar of the Enriched Opportunity Programme - which is all about finding the keys to unlock people's potential. The Dementia Support Worker will build a relationship and develop an understanding of the individual. Working (and playing!) closely for a number of weeks, you will establish their challenges, their well being, the essences of their life and personality, piecing together the picture of the unique individual. You will then help others who support the individual use these keys to help them live as independent and fulfilling life as possible.

Please note that interviews for shortlisted candiadtes will take place on Wednesday 25th October 2017.

ExtraCare is a registered charity established in 1988 and based in Coventry. Our vision is better lives for older people and our mission is creating sustainable communities that provide homes older people want, lifestyles they can enjoy and care if it’s needed. To deliver our vision and mission we essentially do three things:

  • We develop new villages
  • We operate villages and schemes
  • We support our villages, schemes and our ‘extra-care’ model through fundraising, advocacy and research

Each village or scheme has 5 to 18 social, health and leisure facilities that are accessible to our residents, volunteers and local people representing all age groups living in surrounding communities. Our Charity Shops help fund care and well-being services for older people living at our each of our locations. www.extracare.org.uk

You should be qualified to QCF Diploma Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent, or be prepared to achieve this qualification within 9 months.

This role will be subject to satisfactory DBS check and references.
