With a long history in traditional waste management we now also work within the waste hierarchy and help clients to eliminate or reduce waste at source, and to consider options for materials recovery, reuse and recycling of waste. We are active in the Energy from Waste sector, providing support to clients with permits, RDF assessment and waste characterisation.
Following a number of years of profitable growth, we are continuing the expansion of our team to enable further market penetration and greater client support. We are now seeking an ambitious Waste Management Consultant to join our growing team and fulfil a key role in achieving these goals.
The base office will be in Southam, very close to the historic market town of Leamington Spa, and the successful candidate will play an important role in the growth of the business in the region. SOCOTEC UK Limited has offices across England, Scotland and Wales, and the role will also provide the opportunity to work in different regions and on a wide variety of projects in the fields of waste / resource efficiency and environmental management.

About the role:
This role enables progression through a number of levels of seniority based on experience and ability. The successful candidate will be supported in the role by "on the job" and specific training courses to ensure development of technical and operational competence, and to facilitate the individuals career progression in accordance with a bespoke career development plan which we will create.

This role covers many aspects of waste management and the successful candidate would undertake a range of duties potentially including but not limited to the following:

- Waste characterisation and re-use assessment.
- Waste classification for disposal purposes.
- Supporting environmental permit applications and permit variations, especially for landfills, waste transfer facilities and energy from waste facilities.
- Assistance with Incinerator Bottom Ash characterisation and classification.
- Sampling of environmental media such as groundwater, leachate, soil and wastes
- Waste audits.
- Supporting work on large waste infrastructure and masterplanning projects.
- Supporting clients during the creation of environmental management systems, and the maintenance of such systems in relation to environmental permits.
- Processing of data and data interpretation.
- Providing support to project managers.
- Preparation of reports, both factual and interpretative.
- Day to day management of projects / tasks, including management of supplier involvement, budgets and timeframes.
- Involvement in the creation of successful proposals.
- Delivery of all work (field and office based) safely and in line with SOCOTEC UK Limited's safety policies and procedures.
- Providing excellent customer service to existing and new clients.

Based in the SOCOTEC Southam office (although other locations may be considered) the successful candidate will provide support to Project Managers by assisting with these elements of the work. The role will involve working on site and in other SOCOTEC offices on occasion.

The role would suit candidates with prior waste management experience within environmental consultancy. We are especially interested in applications from candidates with experience in waste classification, waste re-use and recovery, landfill monitoring and waste site permitting, especially if the experience is in the energy sector and/or relating to waste transfer stations and landfills.
The successful candidate will have a relevant BSc qualification in the environmental sciences, chemistry or an appropriate engineering subject and although not essential, a second degree in a complimentary subject will be a distinct advantage.
Having worked in this field previously the ideal candidate will also have:

- A working knowledge of energy from waste technologies.
- A thorough understanding of waste and recycling systems, waste strategies and the options available to implement them.
- Experience of landfill disposal and landfill monitoring.
- Comprehensive knowledge of waste legislation and policy in the UK.
- Project management skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commercial awareness.
- A strong customer focussed engagement style.
- Excellent IT skills including MS Office applications and a selection of industry specific specialist packages.
- Membership of a relevant professional institute such as the Institute of Waste Management (IWM) or the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and be working towards Chartership.

- A full UK driving licence.
