Job Title: Design and Development Engineer

Location: North East Birmingham

Salary: Circa £40k per annum

Department Description

Technical/Development Engineering develops new products, both for my Clients catalogue and also to meet customer's specific requirements. This includes designing the product, selecting materials, manufacture or purchase of tooling, trialling the product and testing samples to ensure that they meet the product specification. My Clients manufacturing processes include; injection moulding, crosshead and corrugation extrusion, metal turning, metal forming and assembly.

Job Purpose

To manage product development projects with particular emphasis on viability, design, material selection, injection moulding and extrusion processing and testing and approvals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluation of viability of project opportunity including payback period and resource and capital requirements
  • Design and development of new products with particular focus on the material aspects of product design, tooling and the manufacturing process
  • Selection of suitable polymers, including performance, processing and cost
  • Project management ensures that projects come in on time and within budget
  • Participation in the trialling of new products
  • Testing of new products and obtaining of 3rd party approvals where appropriate
  • Provide application advice to customers and end users
  • Participation in the design and manufacture /purchase of tooling
  • Consideration of factors that affect product life
  • Carry out process and design FMEAs
  • Occasional travel, including overseas, to other facilities, Supplier and/or Customer sites may be required from time to time, sometimes involving staying overnight - for which adequate notice will be given

Specific Experience

  • Project management and delivery of new product development
  • Design of moulded parts using engineering plastics
  • Use of 3D CAD, preferably Solidworks
  • Selection of materials and evaluation of finished product performance
  • Knowledge of design and construction of injection mould tooling
  • Experience of injection moulding processes
  • Direct contact with OEM customers
  • Providing application advice
  • Testing of products
  • Experience of a variety of manufacturing processes, polymer and metallic
  • Quality management systems
  • Dealing with external test labs and approval bodies
