Are you an experienced Legal Secretary/Legal Assistant within Family law?
Our friendly and well respected client is seeking a Legal Assistant for their Domestic Violence Unit to provide clerical and administrative assistance to members of the family department, primarily injunctions, and undertake fee earning work based at the Worcester office and other offices as and when required.
Full or part time considered for approximately 9 months. However, there may be the opportunity to remain employed by the firm in another role at the end of the maternity cover.
Skills Knowledge and Experience required for this Legal Assistant role:
1. Good standard of education - minimum of five GCSE subjects (or equivalent).
2. Additional legal qualifications/study an advantage but not essential
3. Previous experience in a legal office desirable
4. Knowledge of general office procedures - ability to prioritise, organise filing and documentation, diary maintenance
5. Articulate, pleasant manner with ability to communicate at all levels
6. Computer Literate - word processing skills to an acceptable standard of speed and accuracy, audio work an advantage.
7. Compassionate, empathic and able to remain calm under pressure
Legal Assistant Key Tasks:
1. To assist fee earners in the department with all aspects of Public Funding to include:
* preparation of bundles
* typing of briefs etc.
* preparing cases for hearings
* completion of Public Funding application forms with clients
* completion of applications for prior authority, payments on account, amendments of Certificates etc
* processing of all legal aid applications
* general administration of Public Funding to include; updating of Legal Aid Agency standard letters and to ensure fee earners are aware of changes.
* attend clients who are eligible for public funding and to refer to other fee earners within the department as and when necessary
* reporting to supervisor on daily basis with updates on current cases
2. Attend at Court with or without Counsel to include issuing Ex-Parte Applications
3. Carry out fee earning work as required which may include:
* attendance of clients attending the Drop-In Unit to assess case
* correspondence and telephone calls
* communicating with legal aid agency/clients, updating online system
* preparation and perusal of legal documents
* dealing with solicitors and other professionals
4. Deal with injunctions to include attending on emotional clients, in a supportive role
5. Maintain and develop general expertise in family law and the requirements of the Legal Aid Agency
6. Hours / Billing / Credit Control
To seek to achieve key performance targets to be agreed with the firm
7. Keep up to date with the needs of the firm and developments in relevant law and procedures and to develop office skills by:
* attending when required fee earners meetings and departmental meetings
* attending in-house and external courses and seminars as agreed
* reading relevant periodicals as circulated
* co-operating with the firm's aim that all fee earners attain 16 hrs training per year
8. Ensure the delivery of the same high standard of work to both Publicly Funded and privately paying clients
9. Remain familiar with the firm's requirements as to Client Care and quality standards
10. Remain familiar with the code of practice of the Resolution and to observe the code in all dealings on behalf of the firm.
11. Completed files must not remain 'open' for more than 28 days unless there is an ongoing complaint or query
