The successful candidate will need to have sound theoretical knowledge and a strong track record of applied experience across a range of river types in the UK.


Our workload is varied and covers a wide range of infrastructure projects (e.g. HS2, Highways England, Network Rail) and river management projects (river restoration, natural flood management (NFM), understanding flood risk attributable to coarse sediment dynamics, weir removal, fish pass design etc, for clients such as River Trusts, National Trust, Natural England and the Environment Agency (via a number of frameworks)).

We also have strong links to academia, which we wish to build upon into the future.

Detailed design of the diversion and river restoration of the River Eye (SSSI) as part of the Melton Mowbray Distributor Road project.

Detailed design and construction of restoration works on Worseley Brook, Salford to restore a mixed sediment morphology along a highly modified urban watercourse

Design and construction of a pool-riffle-point bar bypass channel on the chalk fed River Beane for Affinity Water

Restoration of a section of the Upper River Lee to re-establish a chalk river morphology in Luton

River restoration and enhancement of floodplain connectivity on the River Cocker at Rogerscale for the West Cumbria Rivers Trust.

Naturalisation of the River Lyvennet at Kings Meaburn for the Eden Rivers Trust.

Naturalisation of Swindale Beck for RSPB, Environment Agency, Natural England and United Utilities (Winner of the ENDS Environmental Project Award 2017, Winner of the Wild Trout Trust Environment Award 2017).

Determination of NFM options for three tributaries to the White Cart Water for the East Renfrewshire Council, and further river restoration design work on the Levern Water.

Identification of NFM measures in the Trawden catchment for the Environment Agency.

Development of NFM and river restoration opportunities for the Coledale and Newlands Beck, Braithwaite for Natural England.

Restoration of the Yorkshire Derwent floodplain for the Environment Agency.

Creation of floodplain wetland on the River Yarrow for the Environment Agency.

Re-meandering of the River Beane at Woodhall Estate for Affinity Water.

Weir removal and naturalisation of the River Trent for Staffordshire Wildlife Trust.

Job Responsibilities:

The appropriate level of technical expertise is required in order that the Job / Project Accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the necessary standard:

Technical oversight and guidance of work undertaken by the hydromorphology team including fieldwork, hydraulic and sediment transport modelling, report writing etc.;

Working with a range of internal disciplines including Ecology, Water, Engineering, Heritage etc. to develop holistic project solutions;

Leading on and contributing to WFD assessments and environmental impact assessments, guiding new infrastructure developments to the best environmental outcomes;

Leading consultation with statutory regulators where required, particularly the EA and NE;

Working with hydromorpology Technical Practice Group (TPG) and to take on the TPG lead for the UK, sharing knowledge and supporting overseas projects as required;

Maintaining links to selected academic institutions;

Representing the client at key conferences in the UK and overseas;

Technical project management;

To spread an understanding of the importance of hydromorphology, and to further develop the clients hydromorphology offer;

Maintaining excellent client relationships and developing new clients;

Identification of new internal and external clients;

Recruiting talented individuals to grow the team, as required;

Business development and work winning, including the preparation of high quality project and framework tenders;

Working with financial systems to track project financial performance;

Responsibility for health and safety matters within the team, working with safety systems and signing off of risk assessments for field work; and

Ensuring projects are managed in line with Integrated Management System (IMS).

Minimum Requirements Essential:

* In-depth knowledge of hydromorphology/fluvial geomorphology, including experience of a range of river types;

* Experience of all stages of a project including outline feasibility, options appraisal, detailed design and contract/specification;

* Experience of a range of projects including river restoration, natural flood management, weir removal, and infrastructure-related hydromorphological assessment and design;

* Sound knowledge of sediment transport processes;

* Experience of high gradient and low gradient systems and bedrock, coarse and fine sediment dynamics;

* Extensive fieldwork experience including catchment walkovers, fluvial audits etc.;

* Experience in supervising 1D-2D and 2D only hydraulic modelling including interpretation of modelling results for design functionality/sustainability, erosion and deposition dynamics etc.;

* Experience of undertaking, and guiding others to undertake, qualitative and quantitative analysis of sediment dynamics;

* Excellent analytical skills and knowledge of analytical methods;

* Ability to work with project engineers, and other disciplines to understand the balance of project drivers, and deliver solutions that are effective and sustainable;

* Strong technical leadership, and proven ability to mentor and grow talent;

* Excellent written and verbal skills, including the ability to summarise technical information in plain English and present confidently to a wide range of audiences;

* Strong understanding of the hydromorphology market;

* Experience of a range of client types, including statutory bodies, infrastructure clients and the third sector;

* Good team leadership skills, including the ability to lead a geographically dispersed team.

* Excellent client communication and client management experience;

* Strong commercial awareness;

* Strong health and safety awareness and experience of using safety systems; and

* Strong business acumen and experience of working to Quality Management procedures.


* International experience;

* Supervision of construction work; and

* Experience of innovating in the field of hydromorphology, including the use of new and emerging technologies.

* Preferred Qualifications High quality degree in a relevant field, and ideally a Masters/PhD; and

* Membership of a related professional institute, ideally with chartered status
