Head of Media Relations & External Communications

upto £52k

This is a brand new role within the Communications Team that is responsible for external communications, media relations, digital communications, public affairs, stakeholder engagement, events and internal communications.
You will manage the External Communications team with responsibility for performance management, objective setting, learning and development plans, and pastoral care.
The role will oversee the day-to-day line and task management of 4 employees.
You will provide leadership support to the running of the external communications team with a focus on the delivery of the communications strategy alongside development of the team. The role also encompasses oversight and delivery of all digital assets and communications – online, social and all publications as well as all branding and design responsibilities.

You will oversee the communication of key messages, develop communications strategies and campaign plans for a variety of audiences including media, stakeholders and the public.

* Other responsibilities include managing and developing all digital communication channels
* Proven experience in digital communications and managing content for digital channels.
* Proven experience and communicating key messages to audiences in a creative way.

To ensure they are modern, consistent with other channels, accurate and being used to most effectively communicate key messages.
In addition, you will ensure the communications strategy is promoted internally and adhered to, including the development and implementation our digital communications strategy. Developing and enforcing house and corporate styles across the organisation will be required and the post holder will also work closely with the Head of Public Affairs to ensure a joined-up approach to communications.

* Having oversight and being closely involved with the press office function ensuring smooth and effective handling of all media calls both reactive and proactive.
* Managing the day-to-day delivery of communications plans, ensuring they are impactful and strategic in execution
* Manage and coordinate day-to-day team operations – monitoring coverage, ensuring reactive calls are dealt with efficiently and in a robust way and reporting is done in a timely and impactful way.
* Ensure all communications material is produced in a clear and well written/produced manner
* Oversee delivery and upkeep of the commissions digital footprint externally including the website, social media and the production of all commission publications including the annual report
* Manage branding and corporate ID including taking responsibility for the design of all materials and publications to ensure consistency
* Support creativity within the team
* Work closely with senior internal stakeholders
* Represent the Communications Team at a senior level
* Manage and take part in the on-call out-of-hours media calls rota
* Manage budgets when required
* Representing the commission when required with external organisation

Skills and Experience

* Excellent communications skills both written and verbal
* Proven experience of dealing with high profile reactive and proactive media relations
* Proven experience of successfully managing a team
* Proven ability to spot potential reputational risks and mitigate against them
* Vast experience in writing and creating impactful material for external audiences
* Experience of devising and implementing effective and creative campaigns for a variety of audiences
* Proven experience of motivating and developing individuals
* Building excellent working relationships both internally and externally
* Managing external suppliers
* Demonstrable experience of introducing new ways of working successfully
* Experience of creating and updating websites and creating new content for digital channels
* Tact and diplomacy
