The Senior Engineering Manager will have responsibilities that include providing group wide support to the development of engineering excellence, both people and process, responsible for driving engineering strategy and providing technical leadership. This will involve establishing and overseeing the appropriate engineering governance, processes, standards, tools and testing to ensure successful delivery.

As part of the CTO office, deputise for the Chief Technology Officer, supporting and deputising for him on all aspects of Technology, as required.

Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, the Senior Engineering Manager will be a senior member of the Business Support team. He or she will work closely with the System Wide Architects, System Design Engineers, Engineering Managers and Project Managers / Directors across all telent business areas.

As priorities and resource availability dictate, the SEM may be required to be directly involved in the engineering aspects of complex major telecoms / IT infrastructure projects with multiple technologies and subcontractors. This will include supporting Project Managers / Directors in the delivery of major projects and management of customers from an engineering prospective.

Key Objectives:

•Get to know the telent businesses and programmes and understanding requirements before ensuring appropriate engineering processes, tools & capabilities are in place to drive telent forward;

•ensuring appropriate engineering resources are in place for current and future projects through building and developing the engineering team;

•assisting Business Unit and Project Engineering managers in the establishment and management of all engineering governance activities associated with projects;

•ensuring designs and engineering activities meet contractual customer requirements

•ensuring designs incorporate considerations of health and safety, environment and sustainability, security, and reduced maintenance costs;

•ensuring designs are standards based and provide scale and flexibility;

•management and running of all testing activities;

•management of engineering review and change processes.

Deliverables include:

•Establishment and management of end-to-end engineering governance processes, tools and standards for projects;

•Maintenance of technical compliance for all designs and assets within the network, for the life of the Agreement;

•Ensuring that engineering designs and solutions incorporate considerations of health and safety, environment and sustainability, security, and reduced maintenance costs;

•Ensuring that engineering designs are standards based, provide scale and flexibility, and future proof to accommodate changes in the Customer's requirements;

•Managing the development and updating of all technical documentation;

•Management of technical compliance, and requirements management activities;

•Leading the engineering aspects of the customer's approvals ("get consent") process, for the introduction of new technology and services;

•Representing telent at technical meetings with the customer, and liaising with the Customer's technical lead and technical approvals team as required;

•Liaising with other Engineering Managers across telent, in relation to governance, processes, standards and tools.

•Direct management of engineering team responsible for engineering governance and testing activities

•Deputy leadership of the Technology function as required, which may involve customer liaison, staff management, budgeting and planning, design and development activities etc.

Experience:

•Proven experience of leading and managing engineering teams (including Senior Engineers) to deliver complex major telecoms / IT infrastructure projects with multiple technologies and subcontractors

•Significant experience of establishing and managing project engineering governance arrangements

•Broad understanding of multiple technologies (e.g networks, data, software, hardware, security, CCTV, voice, PA/VA, Wireless etc)

•System requirement management

•Customer facing experience with proven experience managing customers effectively

•Mechanical & electrical delivery into civils contract managers

•Project experience within Transport, Infrastructure (oil / gas / utilities), Defence contractors, Safety related projects or regulated industries or major construction projects

Skills/Qualifications:

Essential:

•Experience managing technology led engineering design and delivery teams

•Demonstrable experience of utilising reference architecture design models

•Excellent team leadership skills

•Strong project management skills of both agile and waterfall methods in engineering delivery;

•Strong technical appreciation and ability to provide technical leadership (preferably networks, data, software, hardware, security, CCTV, voice, PA/VA, Wireless etc)

•Understanding of enterprise architecture

•Ability to take a strategic view and recognise what needs to be place to drive engineering forward

•Ability to support project managers and project directors in the delivery of major projects and management of customers

•Commercially aware

•Excellent communicator to both a technical and non-technical audience

•Good understanding of requirements management

Desirable:

•Good influencing and negotiating skills

•Good team and interpersonal skills

•Knowledge of CCTV, Network Management and Service Management SystemsUseful if candidates had experience of a similar position with Siemens, Thales, BAE or other similar organisations
