A global leader in the testing of marine fuels is seeking a candidate with a strong chemistry background to join their international team.

The Group Science and Technical Manager is globally responsible for providing a technical lead on the provision of marine fuel quality advice to customers through the laboratory testing of marine fuels based on interpretation of results.

The IMO2020 S Cap is a key gamechanger, and this role will enable the Company to maintain its leadership position in marine fuel and advisory services.

The Group Science and Technical Manager will report to the Group Managing Director and will be the functional lead for Technical teams and Lab Managers based in Rotterdam, Singapore, Houston and Fujairah. You will also visit customers in locations across Europe, the Americas, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Therefore, this role will require extensive global travel for over 70% of the time. Candidates can have a home location anywhere in Europe within easy access of an international airport.

The external focus of this role will be via the Group Commercial Director, working closely with Sales Managers.

You could be the perfect candidate for this Group Science and Technical Manager role if you have the following skills and experience:

* A minimum degree level qualification (or equivalent) in a Chemistry subject is essential, with Masters level preferred;

* A deep understanding and knowledge of marine fuel, lubricants chemistry and testing, with and significant marine fuel testing experience, along with good marine engineering knowledge;

* Knowledge and experience of technologies employed in testing marine fuels and oils;

* Analytical and keen eye for detail;

* Self-motivated and results-orientated;

* Client-focused;

* Excellent communication skills (written and oral);

* Strong listening and social skills;

* Fluent English language skills;

* Role location: ability to travel globally and regularly work from the Company's laboratories/offices in Rotterdam;

* Home location: anywhere in Europe within easy access of an international airport;

* Full UK or EU driving licence.


* Lead the Technical teams globally on advising customers of marine fuel and oil quality;

* Work closely with Technical and Lab Managers to investigate significant customer fuel quality problems and develop new testing methods;

* Analyse fuel and lubricants quality data for trend analysis, new fuels/lubes etc. for inclusion into reports, papers and presentations, working closely with Group Commercial Director;

* Advise on fuel characteristics with regard to the 2020 S changes;

* Write technical papers regarding all aspects of marine fuel/lubricants quality;

* Present at global conferences on topics relating to marine fuels/lubricants quality;

* Represent the Company on industry bodies such as Intertanko, IBIA, CIMAC, ISO and report the activities to relevant teams within the Company;

* Support and advise the Group MD with the prioritisation of laboratory capital equipment by advising on the viability of new chemical analysis techniques, methods and instrumentation and horizon scanning future testing technologies;

* Provide a greater depth of chemistry knowledge to support Sales Managers.


* Help the Company provide a deeper and more rounded technical service and support to clients;

* Help give the Company a stronger voice within industry bodies and therefore greater influence;

* Chemistry issues are handled with expertise and knowledge for TA, Commercial and Clients alike;

* Industry conferences see the Company as a recognised Technical Expert presenting technical papers;

* Shipping Media, that receive papers from the Company's leading technical expert, should view the Company as the leading marine fuel testing company;

* Chemistry takes its place alongside marine engineering in importance and consideration from the Company;

* All the above increases the Company's credibility in delivering sound technical advisory support.


* Salary ???70,000 to ???90,000 EUR (depending on experience)
