More than just a kitchen.

Become a caterer in the prison service.

Band 3 Catering Assistant

HMP Swinfen Hall, Staffordshire

Starting salary GBP21,644 - GBP24,061 + 17% allowance for areas where occasional early morning, late evening, weekend and bank holiday work is required.

As a caterer within Her Majesty's Prison and Probation Service, you'll have the chance to change many lives for the better, by supporting and overseeing prisoners in the kitchen. You'll teach them how to work in a safe and efficient manner and will provide meals for the entire establishment, on a daily basis.

Like other catering jobs, a shift pattern is in place which will include some weekend duties although the hours worked will be within a core day generally. You will work in a unique and professional environment. Furthermore, you'll be provided with flexibility, stability, a competitive salary, great pension and civil service benefits.

From preparing and cooking food, to checking on deliveries, to ensuring stock rotation, you'll play a key role in the smooth running of our kitchens. You'll ensure the effective use of ingredients to reduce waste, prepare meals suitable for all religious beliefs, as well cook for those with medical needs.

With a focus on health and safety and very high hygiene standards, you'll review catering practices across the whole unit. Additionally, you'll participate in the selection process of prisoners for kitchen duties and assist with their training.

Among your duties, you'll have to complete monitoring records, forms and reports on prisoner behaviour, and perform rub down and pat down searches, making sure everyone is complying with our safety and security measures.

A driven person who wants to excel, you have a Level 2 certificate in Food Production within Hospitality and Catering or equivalent, as well as a Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate. While a Level 3 Vocational Qualification is not a requirement, you should be willing to work towards it as part of your personal development.
