Home Energy Adviser - Marches Energy Agency
Marches Energy Agency has over 21 years of experience in helping householders keep warm and well at home. We are an independent, Shropshire-based charity and offer a niche role in the health and housing landscape that is opening exciting opportunities with a wide range of partners, around health, social care, and climate change.
As our service continues to develop, our small, friendly team is now seeking an enthusiastic, motivated and compassionate energy adviser to help us support more householders in need. Vulnerability is around age - both old and young - health and limited financial means, all of which can make keeping warm at home a challenge. There are still too many people living in these conditions. Your focus will be on undertaking home visits across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Staffordshire, where you will support householders to be warmer and more comfortable at home. Your help will vary, but will include providing advice and support around tariff switching, fuel debt advocacy, heating controls, energy bills, identifying and supporting householders to have energy efficiency measures fitted, and in maximizing the benefit once fitted. You may also be required to fit low cost energy efficiency measures such as LED bulbs and draught proofing. Additionally, you can also expect to support householders on our telephone service too, depending on demand. Here, you will be required to support householders with un-scripted, caller-led advice from our Shrewsbury office.
On the job training and support will be provided to ensure that the advice and practical support you provide is the best it can be, and remains so. MEA will also pay for you to undertake a Level 3 NVQ in energy awareness, to help prepare you for your new role. You will also be expected to undergo a basic DBS check.
For the right person there will also be scope to develop the role to potentially include the delivery of training for other organisations and attending and/ or running community events.
Specific skills:
To fulfill this post MEA is looking for you to:
* Be a good communicator able to listen and empathise with a range of householders, and to respond with accurate and appropriate advice and support.
* Be a good team player able to work both as part of a small team, but also unsupervised during your home visits.
* Have excellent organizational and time-management skills.
* Have your own transport and a clean driving license.
* Be competent in the use of outlook, access and word etc. You will be required to use a tablet and websites during a home visit to support a householder.
* Ideally have some DIY skills and, with training, be able to fit basic energy efficiency measures, such as radiator panels and draught proofing.
* Demonstrate that you have relevant work experience gained either through the charitable, health or social care sectors, or through the business world, be this part time or full time.
* Be able to show a reasonable level of understanding of energy efficiency in the home, and a clear willingness to learn more.
* Be flexible in your seasonal workloads as there is more winter & less summer work.
Major Tasks and Job Activities:
* To undertake home visits across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Staffordshire, focused on providing energy advice and support, mostly to vulnerable householders.
* To fit low-cost energy efficiency measures.
* In the home, to identify any energy saving measures that could be fitted, and pass those back to colleagues in the office.
* To work with colleagues to ensure all phone lines are answered or calls returned within set target times.
* To provide impartial, unscripted and knowledgeable telephone advice appropriate to the callers needs in relation to energy efficiency, affordable warmth and related issues.
* To deliver outstanding customer service.
* To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of referral routes in order to advise customers about grants for energy efficiency measures and further assistance available.
