Post: Teaching Assistant & Programme Support Worker

Salary: £22,000 per annum to be pro-rata based on working 18 hours/week

Job Purpose

The purpose of the job is to provide extra educational support and extracurricular activities to under privileged children and young people in a friendly, caring and cultural environment taking account of their cultural and language needs. We aim to help them improve their school attainments, overcome barriers to learning and build their confidence.

You will be working under the guidance / instructions of designated project manager to undertake supplementary classes teaching and support programmes, to enable access to learning for under-privileged children and young people, and to lead in the management of children and young people at sites where learning and other activities take place. Activities may be carried out indoor or outdoor.

Key Tasks

Support for children and young people

  • Establish rapport and respectful, trusting relationships with children and young people, acting as a role model and setting high expectations.
  • Supervise and provide particular support for children and young people, including those with special needs, ensuring their access to learning and leisure resources and activities.
  • Ensure children and young people’s safety, welfare and wellbeing. (Basic First aid to be included where appropriate).
  • Promote inclusion and acceptance of all children and young people by encouraging them to interact with each other and to engage in activities led by staff and volunteers.
  • Undertake structured and agreed learning activities/programmes, being aware of children and young people learning styles. Adjust activities according to child or young person responses/needs.
  • Work with children and young people on programmes linked to national curriculum including; Maths, Science and English, recording achievement, progress and feeding back to the supplementary classes project manager.
  • Monitor children and young people’s responses to supplementary classes learning activities and achievement as directed.
  • Provide detailed feedback to project manager, and parents/carers on children and young people’s achievement, progress, problems, etc. as requested.
  • Undertake children and young people record keeping as requested.
  • Work with children needing reading skills by organising and providing reading schemes including, reading club and other.
  • Support the effective participation of children and young people in sporting, indoor leisure activities and outdoor adventures.
  • Maintain a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment, in accordance with supplementary classes and extra-curricular activities plans.
  • Prepare, maintain and use equipment/resources required to meet the supplementary classes lessons plans/learning activity and assist children and young people in their use.

Support for the organisation

  • Be aware of and comply with policies relating to child protection, health & safety, confidentiality, safeguarding and data protection, reporting all concerns to the nominated person.
  • Contribute to the overall work, smooth running and ethos of the organisation.
  • Attend and participate in meetings as required.
  • Accompany staff, volunteers, children and young people on visits, trips and sporting activities as required and take responsibility for a group under the supervision of the project manager.

Qualifications

At least a Bachelor of Education (Bed) or Ba/BSc with qualified teacher status(QTS)

Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Abilities

  • Some experience of working effectively in a learning setting.
  • Skills of empathy, listening, communication and responding with appropriate language to build rapport with children/young people and parents/carers from a variety of ages, abilities and backgrounds.
  • Instruct through, discussions, and demonstrations in subjects such as English, Mathematics and Science.
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet children and young people’s varying needs and interests.
  • Guide and support children and young people with their homework.
  • Observe and evaluate children and young people’s performance, behaviour, social development, and physical health.
  • Meet with parents / carers to discuss their children and young people’s progress.
  • Current first aid certificate.
  • Ability to contribute effectively to workload, planning, supervision and responsibilities of a team.
  • Proven communication and inter-personal skills evidenced by dealing with a diverse range of contacts about potentially complicated and / or sensitive issues.
